Rights Respecting- Participation

Kelly Gray, Safeguarding and Pastoral Deputy Head - 25 Mar 2021

As you may know, we are on the way to becoming a Bronze Right's Respecting School.

Participation is the focus of this week.  It is based on Article 12 and 13 of the UN Rights of the Child charter.  The articles are outlined below.

Participation is one of the four General Principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and is a theme which runs through the whole Convention.

Article 12 – Respect for the views of the child
Every child has the right to express their views, feelings and wishes in all matters affecting them, and to have their views considered and taken seriously. This right always applies, for example during immigration proceedings, housing decisions or the child’s day-to-day home life.

Article 13 – Freedom of expression
Every child must be free to express their thoughts and opinions and to access all kinds of information, as long as it is within the law.

With this in mind, the conseil d'élèves have a challenge for CM1 and CM2 pupils.  The children have voted to have a Friendship Stop in the playground and the conseil d'élèves would like CMs to be involved in the design.  The chosen design will be turned into a poster and placed in a prominent place in the playground.  Pupils who are feeling isolated, can use this stop to find a friend to play with.  So, get creative Think colourful.  Think clear.  Think bold and bright.  It should be designed on A3 paper or card (let you teacher know if you need some) and entries should be handed in after the Easter break.  Good luck!!
